The world is shrouded like a widow in mourning, a heavy darkness draped over house and hillside. The moon has lost its battle with the clouds and the stars have forgotten to shine. Two shadows slip away from the village, making their way deep into the heart of the forest. A small glen lies in front of them, its single occupant waiting patiently, everlastingly.

The prompt inspired me to write a poem instead of a story XD I converted it into the above prose format for my entry, but I thought it might be fun for you to see what it prompted me to write in the first place--

The king sounds so kind and gentile! Great job portraying him as a nice person.

I stand at the grave, its crude, marked only by the bleached bones that lay there. Untouched and forgotten like the soul they once belonged to. Splayed out on a simple slab of stone that was so entangled in undergrowth and moss it had cracked in half. Still, the bones were undisturbed.

There once was a king with a puffed up heart. He believed he was a kind man, but his kindness looked a lot like bribes wrapped with strings. The strings began to tangle, and his strung out gifts began to hang his friends. Each nail in the coffin pricked his puffed up heart, but it didn't cut through and deflate it.

I looked around. I’m so high up, above a vast forest. The golden leaves rustle dryly in the breeze, looking like an ocean of gold. The rock ledge I’m sitting on hangs over a raging river far below. I stifle a gasp of fear as my heart skips a beat. I clasp my arms tight and slide back shivering. For the first time I stand and look behind me.

Claude’s body laid on the rough gravel, deep in troubled slumber. His face was a sickeningly chalky pallor. The crown once proudly worn on his head were now fragments of crusty jewels and gold.

I love your story! I really like how much detail you put into the king's character in those few words! You really described what type of king he was. I also think you did an amazing job with making the reader feel the main character's emotions. You made me feel like I was the main character. And then you decided to end it on a cliff hanger.... I no longer like your story. ;) WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!? I WANT MORE!!!!!! Please. ;)

I'm with Nicole. This is an awesome story! You used your 150 words very wisely. I like how you told the past through the character's thoughts. And it didn't look like you were rushing through the story. It was very organized, and told the past story very well. I also like the ending moral. We can't get anywhere if we dwell in our failure. You also did an amazing job in writing the character "she." Even though she only does two things, those two things tell us enough about her character to where we can use our imagination to make up the rest without messing up her character. All together, this was an awesome story! P.S. WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP LEAVING ME ON CLIFF HANGERS?????!!!!!!

The sword didn’t select the King first. He wasn’t its first choice. It first selected a Queen. A Queen who ruled for only a few mere years. Secretive, shadowed years. She was scorned as a liar. A witch, a thief. The sword was once a gift, but in her grasp, it became a curse. A reminder of the hatred she faced. So she shrouded herself in the timeless mists of magic.
